I. Introduction

Sweet 100 is a hybrid tomato plant that produce loads of cherry tomatoes. It an indeterminate tomato that has had its claim to fame by being a tasty snack straight off the vine. This is for sure one of my top recommendation new gardeners as it is one of the simplest and most productive plants to grow that can help you get an early win under your belt. Lets explore the Sweet 100 Tomato:

II. History and Origin

The Sweet 100 tomato was developed by the renowned Japanese seed company Sakata Seed Corp. It was first introduced to the market in the 70's and quickly captured the attention of both gardeners and commercial growers alike. Since its release, Sweet 100 has gained immense popularity for its outstanding taste and high productivity.

III. Characteristics and Appearance

Sweet 100 produces (as the name states) over 100 small cherry tomatoes that pack a powerful sweet punch. They tend to have longer but thinner vines than other tomatoes with bigger fruit purely because the Sweet 100 fruit isn't as heavy. The tomatoes will transition from green to yellow to finally red when ready to be picked.

IV. Growing Sweet 100 Tomatoes

Sweet 100 tomatoes grow very similar to many other common types of tomatoes; they like well draining soil with full sun for most of the day. They prefer a slightly acidic soil and plenty of room to spread its roots. It is not recommended that your fertilize your plants with a heavy nitrogen fertilizer because this will cause the plants to produce tons of leaves but certainly less fruit. I recommend adding compost when planting tomatoes and possibly some added top dressing of compost throughout the growing season.

Sweet 100 defiantly need some type of steaking or support such as a Florida weave method or a study tomato cage. They produce long vines that love to grow all over the place. It is recommended by most people to prune your tomatoes to minimize diseases and increase yield but there is no method that is 100% full proof.

V. Benefits and Culinary Uses

The Sweet 100 tomato not only delights the taste buds but also offers a range of benefits and versatile culinary uses. Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, and potassium, which contribute to a healthy immune system.

The flavor profile of a Sweet 100 is a great balance between sweetness and acidity, making them an excellent choice for various culinary creations. Here are some suggestions:

  • Fresh in Salads - these tomatoes standout against the sea of green in a salad and deliver a diversity of taste to the dish.

  • Snacking - most people will claim that the tomatoes don't make it far off the vine; They make a great gardening snack.

  • Sauces and Salsas - I have recently tried making salsa using a mix of these and other various tomatoes. (my skills still need improvement)

VI. Conclusion

In conclusion, the Sweet 100 tomato is a remarkable variety that offers both beauty and flavor to any garden. Its origins trace back to the innovative breeding efforts of the Sakata Seed Corporation, resulting in a cherry tomato that has won the hearts of gardeners worldwide. With its abundant production, exceptional taste, and versatile culinary uses, the Sweet 100 tomato is an excellent choice for new gardeners and seasoned enthusiasts alike.
